Although professional boxing was outlawed in Hungary, Papp turned professional in 1957 and set up camp in Vienna, Austria. He won the European Middleweight Championship in 1962 and made six title defenses. Papp was on the verge of a shot at the World Middleweight Championship when the Communist government of Hungary revoked his permit to travel abroad, thus ending his professional career.
